Biological Field Technician

Location: Travel-based assignments throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona
Employment Type: Full-time, rotational

Position Overview

Southern Research and Compliance (SRC) is seeking a Biological Field Technician to support long-term environmental projects across arid, coastal, riparian, and aquatic habitats.

This position is designed for an early-career biologist who wants to quickly build meaningful field experience. Technicians will typically spend approximately two weeks conducting fieldwork, followed by two weeks at home with limited remote responsibilities.

SRC covers approved project travel expenses, including airfare, lodging, rental vehicles, per diem, required equipment, and personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support biological monitoring and environmental compliance activities on active project sites

  • Assist with protected-species, habitat, vegetation, bird, wildlife, and aquatic surveys

  • Conduct pre-activity inspections and document biological observations

  • Maintain accurate field logs, GPS points, photographs, and digital records

  • Assist with environmental site assessments and site reconnaissance

  • Work professionally with field leadership, construction crews, and project personnel

  • Organize field data and assist with technical summaries, maps, figures, and reports

  • Participate in SRC research, methods development, and internal training activities

SCUBA-certified technicians may also support dive-related assignments when required by the project scope and applicable safety procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Wildlife, Fisheries, Natural Resources, or a related field

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to travel for approximately two weeks at a time

  • Ability to work extended hours outdoors in heat, humidity, dense vegetation, and uneven terrain

  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills

  • Professional communication and ability to work around active construction operations

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without employment sponsorship

  • Ability to complete required background checks and drug screening

Limited professional experience is acceptable, and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience identifying native Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona plants and wildlife

  • Bird identification skills by sight or sound

  • Biological monitoring or environmental compliance experience

  • Aquatic sampling, wading, boating, or habitat-assessment experience

  • Open Water SCUBA certification

  • Familiarity with GPS units, mobile data-collection applications, or GIS

  • First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER, OSHA, or similar safety training

Archaeological Field Technician

Location: Texas and New Mexico, including the El Paso–Deming–Lordsburg region
Employment Type: Full-time temporary / contract-based
Work Style: Hybrid, with extended field assignments

Position Overview

Southern Research and Compliance LLC (SRC) is seeking an Archaeological Field Technician to support cultural resource monitoring, archaeological survey, and construction monitoring projects across Texas and the Southwest.

This position is tied to an active project contract, with the potential to transition into a permanent role based on performance and business needs. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-minded, comfortable working in remote desert environments, and capable of producing accurate, defensible field documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor active construction activities for cultural resource protection and compliance with project requirements

  • Identify sensitive resources and establish avoidance areas or buffers

  • Implement inadvertent discovery and work-stoppage procedures when cultural materials or human remains are encountered

  • Coordinate professionally with construction personnel, agency staff, and SRC project management

  • Prepare daily monitoring reports, field notes, GPS records, photographs, and weekly summaries

  • Conduct pedestrian surveys of project areas, access roads, and laydown yards

  • Assist with site documentation, artifact identification, mapping, and NRHP eligibility records

  • Deliver cultural resource awareness training to construction personnel

  • Support SRC research, technical summaries, and field procedure development

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field

  • At least two years of archaeological or cultural resource project experience

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel

  • Ability to pass required federal background screening

  • Ability to work extended schedules, including 10-hour days and up to seven days per week during active monitoring

  • Ability to work outdoors in remote desert conditions and around active construction operations

  • Strong documentation, communication, and attention-to-detail skills

  • Willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time, including extended out-of-state assignments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Southwest archaeology or border-region projects

  • Familiarity with Section 106 and NRHP eligibility criteria

  • Construction monitoring experience on linear infrastructure projects

  • Experience with GPS, GIS, mobile data collection, and field mapping

  • Site recording, sketch mapping, or artifact identification experience

  • Knowledge of Southwest prehistoric and historic material culture

  • OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain it before deployment

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field
