Biological Field Technician

Location: Travel-based assignments throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona
Employment Type: Full-time, rotational

Position Overview

Southern Research and Compliance (SRC) is seeking a Biological Field Technician to support long-term environmental projects across arid, coastal, riparian, and aquatic habitats.

This position is designed for an early-career biologist who wants to quickly build meaningful field experience. Technicians will typically spend approximately two weeks conducting fieldwork, followed by two weeks at home with limited remote responsibilities.

SRC covers approved project travel expenses, including airfare, lodging, rental vehicles, per diem, required equipment, and personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

• Support biological monitoring and environmental compliance activities on active project sites

• Assist with protected-species, habitat, vegetation, bird, wildlife, and aquatic surveys

• Conduct pre-activity inspections and document biological observations

• Maintain accurate field logs, GPS points, photographs, and digital records

• Assist with environmental site assessments and site reconnaissance

• Work professionally with field leadership, construction crews, and project personnel

• Organize field data and assist with technical summaries, maps, figures, and reports

• Participate in SRC research, methods development, and internal training activities

SCUBA-certified technicians may also support dive-related assignments when required by the project scope and applicable safety procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Wildlife, Fisheries, Natural Resources, or a related field

• Valid driver’s license

• Ability to travel for approximately two weeks at a time

• Ability to work extended hours outdoors in heat, humidity, dense vegetation, and uneven terrain

• Strong attention to detail and documentation skills

• Professional communication and ability to work around active construction operations

• Legal authorization to work in the United States without employment sponsorship

• Ability to complete required background checks and drug screening

Limited professional experience is acceptable, and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience identifying native Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona plants and wildlife

• Bird identification skills by sight or sound

• Biological monitoring or environmental compliance experience

• Aquatic sampling, wading, boating, or habitat-assessment experience

• Open Water SCUBA certification

• Familiarity with GPS units, mobile data-collection applications, or GIS

• First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER, OSHA, or similar safety training
